The best time to volunteer if you're a newcomer depends on your interest and primary
focus.

If modeling appropriate behavior (being yourself) in order to give little kids hope
is your thing, we invite you to disguise the endeavour as homework helping. That
means you'd need to be here after 4:30PM when the kids get home from school, and
before 7:30PM when they get ready for bed. They say people never see themselves
more mercifully than when they see their reflection in the eyes of a child. This
time slot stays constant every day of the week and every week of the year. It's
probably the most difficult, rewarding thing we do.

If it's gastronomy that rules your planets, come and test yourself in our
professional kitchen! We especially need you on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons
and Friday morning. You can try out the recipes that will make your retirement
restaurant a singular success, or humbly learn large quantity cooking from Iron
Chefs on a mission from God! Nothing says "lovin" like something from the oven, and
we make that little speech 3500 times each week. Cooking for the crowd starts at
4:00AM, but no one is expected or even needed until 8:00AM. This schedule is
affected by holidays and some feast days, so call ahead to inquire about the
calendar, or to bring more than two friends for moral support.

Everyday

Serve dinner and then read aloud to little kids from 4:30 to 7:30 PM. In the evening, help us serve dinner and tuck-in our guests. Dandle kids, and please, please, please, read to them. Baby-sit actual babies!

Sundays
|
|
We serve our feast from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. This is the most special event of the week, a time we can share a meal at table, with Christ and with our homeless friends. We usually have groups, so you need to schedule this time.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights

You are needed to serve the poor in the Civic Center. Arrive at 4:30 to finish preparing the food. At 5:30 p.m. we hop in the van and arrive downtown. We have conversations, play music, and serve dinner. Everyone is welcome to dish it out near the Public Defender's Office. Help us remember the mail.

Thursdays
|
|
Join us for the food pick-up at the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro. See how much food you can put in the van. From 9:00 A.M. on we can use your help to hand out clothing as the families await the food distribution. We make up grocery bags for 40 families from our food pantry, and, when we serve at 11:00 PM, we watch their kids scream and run amok with delight as we serve up unlimited quantities of eclairs, cream puffs, and cakes. We should be arrested by the American Dental Association.

Fridays

We would welcome a group to come on a Friday morning to both assist in the preparation of the Friday brunch and to offer activities for preschool age children and their parents. Arrive at 8:30 A. M. and conclude with a shared lunch at 11:00. Children of the volunteers would be welcome to join in!
